The Rebel is a one
design class sailboat. All Rebel hulls are produced from the same mold.
Rebels are built to the class rules and cannot be changed or modified
by the boat builder unless authorized by the Class. This is the basic
definition of all one design class sail boats. Nickels Boat Works builds the Rebel and several other one design class sail boats. They are known world wide for quality and strict attention to class rules. The Rebel is built to last a life time with some over 50 years old and still sailing. The Rebel Sailing brochure shows photos with the typical crew of two, but the Rebel can also be day sailed with six passengers in the roomy cockpit. With its large steel center board, it is extremely stable and always comfortable to sail. Rebel specifications; Overall length - 16' 1 1/4"

Latest E-News from Bruce 11 Sept 08 1) Mail Bag – “Labor Day weekend I got proposed to. Not a marriage proposal, I've been married for 57 years and I am still happy, but my skipper Bob Murray asked if I would sail with him again next year. So what is so special about a skipper asking his crew to return next year? Bob will turn 90 next month, October, and I will turn 77 in December. He bought new sails this year for us and we should use them at least two years. We sailed all the races this year except the ones when there were whitecaps and sometimes we started those and then quit after the first mark. We do very well, in fact we still manage to win a few each season. Our tacks are not quite as crisp as they use to be and Bob may fall sometimes tacking and for the first time since I started to sail I missed the hiking strap on a quick tack and did a flip out of the boat. It was the last leg of the last race of our regatta and we were ahead of Allan and Karel heading for the finish and there I was in the water. Allan said "Mom's in the water" and they took off and beat us. A strong kid on the rescue boat pulled me in. Bob and I are a good match we both like to compete and we give it our all. At one time Bob won our fleet championship ten years in a row and Andy Rundquist and I also won ten years in a row until Andy went to the MC. Come to our Regatta next year (June 2009) and we will show you how good and old pair of sailors can sail.” Pat Vorel, GRYC PS: Bruce, do what ever you want with this article. See you in a few weeks at your Regatta, I will of course be sailing with Mary. 2) Thanks for the great story Pat and for attending CLYC’s Regatta to be held September 20th and 21st, 2008. We will have Rebels, Interlakes, Wayfarers, Snipes and Sunfish attending go to www.clarklakeyachtclub.org for the registration form. Brunch around 11, Noon Skippers meeting, then 3 to 4 races. We may need extra crews – almost always. 3) The CLYC Portsmouth Series continues Saturday September 13th, 2008 and will end on September 27th, 2008. The half-hour gun will be at 10:30 am with the start at 11:00 am for all boats. The Portsmouth Series is based on an International time rating for all one-design classes, so that scoring will be adjust for the time it takes to finish. 4) Rebel 4200 is now complete and ready for your sailing-racing pleasure. This is the Rebel that was being built during the open house and tour Hugh so kindly held at NBW during our Nationals. Contact Hugh at nickelsboatworks@juno.com 5) The NRCA Board of Governors approved a $50.00 stipend for the up coming One-Design Symposium. Latest E-News from Bruce 14 Aug 08 1) Mid-August is generally met with a twinge of angst as the Nationals have been sailed for yet another year meaning the season is nearing its grand finale. That finale includes the September issue of the Rabble, which will be ready for the printer, as soon as all of those promised stories arrive in your editor’s mailbox. Frankly, the anticipation is stressing me out! On the upside, we have a huge collection of photographs that were provided by Larry Christensen – Coldwater, Kevin Nickels – Lake Fenton, Carl Pohly – Lake Fenton, Karel Vorel – Grand Rapids, Scott Wright – Grand Rapids as well as our regular contributors Sharon Nowak – Clark Lake and Al Schonborn –Toronto. As the pictures were selected and edited for the Rabble a number were forwarded for your personal use. They’re a few more that I hope to send and Al’s pictures, which includes most of the collection, is at http://www.rebelsailor.com/Nationals2008/08RN_index.html. Of course those of us who attended the Nationals are anticipating the CD of the Nationals Kevin is putting together. I’m not sure if you can still order one, but let the Nickels family know you’re interested. 2) Illustrating how technology is not always beneficial, the automated scoring system produced a scoring glitch that impacted the standings. Unfortunately, this glitch wasn’t noticed until after the awards so you may want to check the standings before you engrave. Of the 27 boats competing a total of four were affected and the National Race Committee apologizes and appreciates your cooperation in resolving the matter. 3) The 38th Annual Des Plaines Invitational was held over the weekend of August 9th and 10th. Well Sharon and I did not sail, we had a great time and really appreciated the hospitality. Judi and John Washburn hosted an absolutely outstanding dinner at their home Saturday evening that was more than enough compensation for all of Chi-town’s traffic (what John refers to as “local colour”)! So for those of you who didn’t make the trip, you certainly missed a great time on shore as well as the water. More will be in the January 2009 Rabble, but here is a picture of everyone in attendance (attached).

Well Regatta Chair Mike Smith won’t guarantee that the weather will be as great as last year’s, CLYC promises to provide you with the our best effort in making this yet another memorable event. More Information at: www.clarklakeyachtclub.org 5) Clark Lake sailors please remember that August 16th starts the brand new Portsmouth Series. There will be one (1) race and the half-hour gun will be at 10:30 am with the start at 11:00 am for all boats. The Portsmouth Series is based on an International time rating for all one-design classes, so that scoring will be adjust for the time it takes to finish. Your Sailing & Safety chair (me) could you some help with scoring and such. Thanks. 6) The NRCA Board of Governors approved a $50.00 stipend for the up coming One-Design Symposium. So mark your calendar for November 14-16, 2008, Atlanta Yacht Club, Acworth, GA. As Dave Perry, Greg Fisher, Skip Dieball and another 25 outstanding speakers, plus the Mt. Gay Rum Speaker Series Presentation and Party, North U Racing Rules Seminar with Dave Perry, Go Fast Workshops, National One-Design Awards and a Race Management Seminar all in one weekend. This is the place for sailors to come together and set the course for one-design sailing. Be there and check the web for updates at http://www.ussailing.org/odcc/2008%20ODSS%20Atlanta/2008ODSShomepage-Atlanta.asp. to the recently completed Grand Rapids Yacht Club Invitational held last weekend with Scott Wright,Steve Rowe, Barry and Bruce Nowak, Art Daglow, Al Vorel, Mark Quiniff, Judy Washburn, LeAnne Daglow, Mike Stoodley, Chris Knape, Jim Quiniff, John Wahburn and Neil Robb. Front RowAnn Markaity, Amy Bourne, Mary and Karel Vorel and Kayla Kalmbach this fine group of Rebel sailors traveling as far as Dartmouth to attend the windy races. Fleet 2 results are posted on the club website at: www.clarklakeyachtclub.org. We also heard from James Garrison of Minnesota who “salvaged Rebel #441 from a field at a marina in Outing, Minnesota. The boat was left lying upside down with a nasty fork-lift hole in the hull; the deck was shot with small trees growing out of the gunwales.” Then after making repairs he and his wife Roxanne took the yet to be named boat out “sailing on Bald Eagle lake, next to White Bear lake, and we were sailing in sustained winds of about 20 knots, with 35 knot gusts. I could sail on a reach and close to the wind, spilling wind as needed, but was afraid of getting knocked down. ” Now that’s weather! Greenwood Lake notes that “So far, quite a few have expressed a desire to go to Fenton. I know that the Zimmers are going so that Josh can defend his Jr National title. Jim Miller and Dan Leon have also expressed a desire to go. I am planning on showing up with two different crews. George is uncommitted so far. Jack Schuchart is also uncommitted. Jeff Schuchart once again has to work (that guy has to get another job!). Bob Krahulik hasn't surfaced yet this season, so we don't know if he will be joining us.” With that we are wondering if the Gage will come up from Coldwater so that the two Junior National Champions can sail head to head. Bill Selick also noted that “It's that time of year again, and Fleet 21 is trying to expand our membership, but we don't have enough boats. I've been given authority by my fleet to look around for another boat like "Orange Crush" to buy so we are ready when a new member shows up at our doorstep. I intend to do some shopping while I am out west (not sure when we will take delivery, but we can work that out later). We are looking for any hull number between 3900 and 4100 which would make a nice starter boat for a new member or an upgrade for anyone with a "clunkers". We are not interested in boats with major problems as that might be a turnoff for new members. (We already have 3 or 4 of those boats sitting around the lake, so we have enough of them if needed).” You may contact Bill at: bill@selick.com and be sure to wish him a happy 50th as of June 22nd. 2) Clark Lake is wrapping up its Fun/Learn Sail Series this coming Thursday, June 26th. We’ve had a great turn out with about 16 or so new to sailing folks coming out and enjoying our sailing program. Plus we have had the usual suspects on the water helping out and sailing all about. Thanks so much for joining in on the fun! To end the series, we are hoping to have a little double-deck 7 card draw on the water, if the wind cooperates. For the 4th of July party that is on the 4th of July this year, Clark Lake announces its 1st Annual Kayak Soccer/Hockey Water Sport (AKS/HWS). Using a large orange ball on a field marked by racing buoys we will have 2 teams of 5 or 6 or more or less face off for about 30 minutes. Only the goalie will be able use their hands, and checking is not allowed – splashing sounds fair. We will also need a couple of volunteers to act as refs, as the use of power boats is unsafe. Please email Bruce at b1now@juno.com and plan on arriving at 10:30 am for a game time of 10:50ish or so. Reservations for the party must be made to Dan Bush as announced in the flyer. 3) The Rebel Rabble went to the printer a bit late but was mailed out last Thursday. In apologizing for the delay I would remind everyone but especially our fleet captains to provide stories about your goings on, so we can all enjoy the fairy tale. Thank You.
